Isostasy

(Isostasy)

(Introduction):

Iso = समान (Equal)

Stasis = स्थिति या संतुलन (Stand or Balance)

(Basic Concept):

(Major Theories of Isostasy):

(Airy’s Theory, 1855):

(George B. Airy)

(Pratt’s Theory, 1859):

(John H. Pratt)

(Heiskanen’s Modification):

(Evidence of Isostasy):

(Gravitational Surveys):

(Post-Glacial Rebound):

(Seismic Data):

(Types of Isostasy):

(Static Isostasy):

(Dynamic Isostasy):

(Significance of Isostasy):

(Conclusion):

Isostasy

                   Earth's Equilibrium Theory

Introduction:

The term "isostasy" is derived from two Greek words:

Iso = Equal

Stasis = Stand or Balance

Meaning: "Gravitational equilibrium of rock mass beneath the Earth's crust."

This theory states that there is a difference in density and thickness beneath the Earth's higher and lower elevations, which keeps the entire Earth's crust in gravitational equilibrium.

Basic Concept of Isostasy:

Just as a piece of ice floats on water—

The thicker ice remains submerged deeper, while the smaller ice remains submerged shallower.

Similarly, the Earth's crust is a light layer that "floats" on the denser mantle beneath.

The crust is thick and light beneath mountains, while it is thin and heavy beneath the oceans.

This state of equilibrium is called "isostasy."

Major Theories of Isostasy:

1. Airy's Theory (1855):

Propounder: Sir George B. Airy

This assumes that the Earth's density is the same but the crust's thickness varies.

The crust is thicker beneath high mountain regions, extending downward like "roots."

In lower regions, this crust is thinner.

This is also called the "Floating Mountain Root Model."

Example: A thick crust exists beneath the Himalayas.

 2. Pratt's Theory (1859):

Propounder: John H. Pratt

It stated that the Earth's crust has a uniform thickness but differs in density.

Higher regions have lower density and lower regions have higher density.

Thus, the density difference maintains balance.

Example: Rocks in mountainous regions are lighter (less dense).

3. Heiskanen's Modification:

This is a modification of both Airy's and Pratt's theories.

It posited that parts of the Earth's crust differ in both thickness and density.

This theory is considered more realistic in modern geological studies.

 Evidence of Isostasy:

1. Gravitational Surveys:

Differences in gravitational force were observed at different locations—this suggests that lighter material lies beneath mountainous regions.

2. Post-Glacial Rebound:

When ice sheets melt, the land begins to rise again as their weight decreases—this is the restoration of equilibrium.

Example: Scandinavia and Canada.

3. Seismic Data:

Seismic waves reveal differences in the density of materials beneath the Earth.

Types of Isostasy:

1. Static Isostasy:

When a region is already in equilibrium.

 2. Dynamic Isostasy:

When equilibrium is being restored after a breakdown (such as after a glacier melts).

Significance of Isostasy:

Helps in understanding the Earth's geomorphic balance.

Explains mountain building and sea-level changes.

Helps in understanding the process of geological uplift and subsidence.

Useful in explaining earthquakes and plate tectonics.

Conclusion:

Isostasy is a scientific explanation of the Earth's geological balance.

This theory states that the Earth's crust and mantle are in gravitational equilibrium—

If the load in an area increases, it will sink, and if the load decreases, it will rise.

Thus, the Earth constantly strives to "maintain balance."
