(Earth Movements)
(Rotation)
(Revolution)
(Rotation of the Earth)
(West to East)
(Axis):
(Alternation of Day and Night)
(Time Difference)
(Coriolis Effect)
(Centrifugal Force)
(Revolution of the Earth)
(Orbit):
(Counter-clockwise)
(Change of Seasons)
(Solstices)
(Internal Movements)
(Earthquakes)
(Volcanic Eruptions)
(Plate Tectonics)
(Faulting)
(External Movements)
(Erosion)
(Deposition)
(Transportation)
(Conclusion):
Earth's Movements
The Earth is constantly in motion. It has two primary movements:
1. Rotation
2. Revolution
In addition, there are some internal and external movements, such as seismic activity, plate tectonics, etc.
1. Rotation of the Earth
➤ Definition:
The Earth rotates from west to east on its axis; this is called rotation.
➤ Time Period:
The Earth takes 23 hours 56 minutes 4 seconds to rotate once on its axis, which is called a sidereal day.
➤ Direction of Rotation:
West to East
➤ Axis:
The Earth's axis is an imaginary line that passes through the North Pole and South Pole and through the Earth's center.
This axis makes an angle of 66.5° with the plane of Earth's orbit.
➤ Consequences of Rotational Motion:
1. Creation of Day and Night
– When a part of the Earth faces the Sun, it is day, and when the opposite part faces the Sun, it is night.
2. Alternation of Day and Night
– The Earth's rotation causes regular alternation of day and night.
3. Time Difference
– The Earth rotates 360° in 24 hours → 15° in 1 hour.
Therefore, there is a difference of 1 hour between every 15° of longitude.
4. Coriolis Effect
– Due to rotation, winds and ocean currents are deflected.
to the right in the Northern Hemisphere and to the left in the Southern Hemisphere.
5. Centrifugal Force
– This force is greatest at the equator, causing the Earth to appear flat (oblate spheroid shape).
2. Revolution of the Earth
➤ Definition:
The Earth revolves around the Sun in a fixed orbit; this motion is called revolution.
➤ Time Period:
One revolution takes 365 days and 6 hours—called a sidereal year.
These 6 hours are added every fourth year to create a leap year (366 days).
➤ Orbit:
Earth's orbit is elliptical.
➤ Direction of rotation:
West to East (Counter-clockwise)
➤ Consequences of rotation:
1. Change of Seasons
– The Earth's seasons vary due to the tilt (23.5°) of the axis and its rotation.
2. Variation in the Length of Day and Night
– The duration of day and night varies at different times of the year.
3. Change in the Sun's Sunrise and Setting Points
– The Sun's sunrise and sunset points change throughout the year.
4. Equinoxes and Solstices
March 21 (Spring Equinox) and September 23 (Autumn Equinox) – Day and night are equal.
June 21 (Summer Solstice) – The longest day in the Northern Hemisphere.
December 22 (Winter Solstice) – The longest night in the Northern Hemisphere.
5. Earth's Position Changes in the Solar System
During its rotation, the Earth is sometimes closer to the Sun (perihelion – around January 3) and sometimes farther away (aphelion – around July 4).
3. Earth's Internal Movements
These movements are related to thermal energy within the Earth and plate tectonics.
Earthquakes
Volcanic Eruptions
Plate Tectonics
Folding and Faulting
These create landforms such as mountains, valleys, faults, and other features.
4. Earth's External Movements
These are caused by the influence of solar energy, wind, water, ice, etc.
Examples:
Erosion
Deposition
Transportation
These cause changes in Earth's topography.
Conclusion:
Earth's movements—rotation, rotation, internal, and external—affect life on Earth, weather, seasons, time, and landforms.
These movements make Earth a vibrant and dynamic planet.
