Continental Drift Theory

(Continental Drift Theory)”

(Continental Drift Theory)

(Alfred Wegener), 1912

(Introduction)

(Wegener’s Proposition)

(Pangaea)

(Evidences for Continental Drift)

(A) जियोग्राफिकल प्रमाण (Geographical Evidences)

(Jig-saw fit)

(Geological Evidences)

(Rock Structure Similarity)

(Paleontological Evidences)

(Mesosaurus Fossil)

(Glossopteris flora)

(Climatic Evidences)

(Glacial Deposits)

(Forces of Drift)

(Centrifugal Force)

(Tidal Force)

(Pole Fleeing Force)

(Criticism of Continental Drift Theory)

(Significance)

(Modern View)

(Plate Tectonics Theory)

(Conclusion)

Continental Drift Theory

Continental Drift Theory

Proposed by – Alfred Wegener, 1912

1. Introduction

The Continental Drift Theory is the earliest scientific theory explaining the current positions of the continents on the Earth's crust. Wegener proposed that all the continents were once joined together as a single landmass called Pangaea, which broke apart over time and drifted to their present locations.

This theory formed the foundation for the development of Plate Tectonics.

2. Wegener's Proposition

(1) One Continent – Pangaea

Approximately 250 million years ago, there was a single supercontinent on Earth, called Pangaea.

Surrounding Pangaea was a vast ocean – Panthalassa.

(2) Fragmentation of Pangaea

Approximately 200 million years ago, Pangaea broke into two parts:

1. Laurasia – the northern segment

2. Gondwana – the southern segment

(3) Further Divisions

Further fragmentation of these two landmasses resulted in:

Asia, Europe, North America (from Laurasia)

Africa, South America, India, Australia, Antarctica (from Gondwana)

and they moved to their present positions.

(4) Movement of the Ocean Floor and Continents

According to Wegener:

The continents are rigid bodies that drift on the soft, viscous material of the ocean floor, consisting of "SIAL (continental crust)"

and "SIMA (oceanic crust)".

3. Evidence for Continental Drift

Wegener presented various scientific pieces of evidence. The main evidence includes:

(A) Geographical Evidence

1. Coastlines of the Continents (A) The Jigsaw Fit

The coastlines of South America and Africa fit together precisely.

A similar fit can also be observed between India, Antarctica, and Australia.

(B) Geological Evidence

1. Similarity of Rock Types

The ancient rock structures of South Africa, Brazil, and India were found to be similar.

2. Similarity of Gondwana Basins

Similar Gondwana sediments are found in India, Australia, South America, and South Africa.

(C) Paleontological Evidence

1. Mesosaurus Fossil

This organism was found only in Africa and South America.

It could not cross the ocean → the two continents were previously connected.

2. Glossopteris Flora

Its fossils have been found in India, Africa, South America, and Australia.

(D) Climatic Evidence

1. Glacial Deposits

Ancient glacial markings are found in India, Africa, and Australia → these regions were previously near the poles.

2. Coal Deposits

Coal is formed in tropical climates, but vast coal deposits exist in Europe and America → these regions were previously located near the equator.

4. Causes of Continental Drift According to Wegener (Forces of Drift)

(1) Centrifugal Force

The Earth's rotation pushes the continents towards the equator.

(2) Tidal Force

Tidal forces generated by the gravitational pull of the sun and moon can also cause the continents to move.

(3) Pole Fleeing Force

A force acting outwards from the poles towards the equator.

✔ However, all these forces are very weak, so modern scientists do not accept them.

5. Criticism of Wegener's Theory (Criticism of Continental Drift Theory)

1. Lack of Mechanism for Movement

Wegener could not explain how such massive continents moved and by what force. 1. Shifted from...

2. Scientific Errors in the Equations

Centrifugal and tidal forces are not powerful enough to move continents thousands of kilometers away.

3. Rigidity of the Oceanic Crust

The idea of the ocean floor being "soft" proved incorrect.

4. Incorrect Analysis of Earthquakes and Volcanism

Wegener could not connect these activities to the movement of continents.

6. Significance of Wegener's Theory

Although the theory had shortcomings, its significance is immense:

1. Foundation for the development of the Plate Tectonics Theory.

2. Basis for understanding the modern structure of continents and oceans.

3. Inspiration for new research in geology, geography, climatology, and paleontology.

4. Significant contribution to understanding the world's mountain ranges, earthquake zones, and seafloor spreading.

7. Modern Scientific Perspective

Plate Tectonics Theory

(After 1960)

The Earth's outer layer is divided into 7 large and several smaller plates.

The plates move by floating on the asthenosphere.

Seafloor spreading, subduction, volcanism, and mountain building are all results of plate movement.

The movement of continents proposed by Wegener is now understood as the movement of plates.

8. Conclusion

The Continental Drift Theory is the initial foundation of modern geology.

Although Wegener could not provide a scientific explanation, the evidence he presented was so strong that the Plate Tectonics Theory later scientifically proved his concept.

Today, the world accepts that continents are indeed dynamic and their positions are constantly changing.

Formation of Coral Reefs and Atoll

(Formation of Coral Reefs and Atolls)

(Introduction)

(Favorable Conditions for Coral Growth)

(Types of Coral Reefs)

(Formation of Coral Reefs)

(Initial Stage)

(Subsidence of Island)

(Complete Submergence)

(Darwin’s Subsidence Theory)

(Major Coral Reef Regions)

(Coral Reefs in India)

(Importance of Coral Reefs)

(Threats to Coral Reefs)

---

(Conservation Measures)

---

(Conclusion)

Thornthwaite’s Classification of Climate

(Thornthwaite’s Classification of Climate)

(Introduction):

(Basis of Thornthwaite’s Classification):

(Annual Rainfall)

(Temperature)

(Evapotranspiration)

(Moisture Index - Im)

(Moisture Index - Im)

\text{Im} = 100 \times \frac{(P - PE)}{PE}

P = वर्षा (Precipitation)

PE = संभावित वाष्पोत्सर्जन (Potential Evapotranspiration)

(Major Climate Types by Thornthwaite):

(Moisture Index)

(Thermal Efficiency)

(Seasonal Concentration of Rainfall)

(Advantages):

(Limitations):

(Application in India):

(Humid)

(Sub-humid)

(Semi-arid to Arid)

(Conclusion):

(Classification of World Climate by Wladimir Koppen)

(Koppen’s Classification of World Climate)

(Introduction)

Köppen's Classification of World Climate

1. Introduction

Classifying the world's climat is essential so that we can scientifically understand the climate types found in different parts of the Earth.

Merits of Koppen's System

1. This climate classification is based on scientific and quantitative data.

2. It establishes a relationship between climate and vegetation.

3. It is a simple and practical system globally.

4. The boundaries of different climate zones are clearly defined.

Limitations of the System

1. Human influences and topography were not considered.

2. Only temperature and rainfall were considered as the basis.

3. Local geographical variation (Relief) was ignored.

4. The modern effects of climate change were not included.

 Conclusion

Köppen's climate classification provides a scientific framework for understanding the Earth's different climate zones.

Although it has some limitations, it remains the most widely used and useful classification in physical geography and environmental studies.

Classification of Climates of the World

(Classification of Climates of the World)

Classification of Climates of the World

Introduction:

Climate on Earth is not uniform. The climate of a region depends on many factors, including its geographical location, latitude, altitude, topography, distance from the ocean, wind patterns, ocean currents, and so on.

To understand this diversity, scientists have divided the world's climate into different categories. This is called climate classification.

 Bases of Climate Classification:

Different scientists have adopted different bases for classifying climates, such as:

1. Based on latitude

2. Based on temperature and rainfall

3. Based on vegetation and natural landscape

4. Based on atmospheric circulation

Major Systems of Climate Classification:

1. Ancient Greek Classification by Greek scholars:

This is the oldest system.

Aristotle and other Greek scholars divided the Earth into three major climatic belts:

Climatic Belt Latitudinal Zone Characteristics

Torrid Zone: Extremely hot and humid from the equator to 23½° north and south.

Temperate Zone: Moderate temperatures from 23½° to 66½° north and south.

Frigid Zone: Extremely cold from 66½° to the poles.

2. Wladimir Köppen's Climate Classification

This is the most popular and scientific classification.

Presented by: Wladimir Köppen

Year: 1900 AD, with revised versions in 1918 and 1936.

 Basis:

Temperature

Precipitation

Natural Vegetation

Köppen's Climate Groups:

Köppen divided the world's climates into five main groups (A, B, C, D, E) and further described subtypes.

 Code Climate Type Characteristics

A - Tropical - Warm temperatures year-round, heavy rainfall

B - Dry - Low rainfall, desert or semi-arid region

C - Temperate / Mild Mid-latitude - Moderate temperatures, seasonal rainfall

D - Cold Continental - Cold winters, hot summers

E - Polar - Extremely cold, snow-covered region

Detailed description of the Coppen classification:

(A) Tropical Climates

Annual average temperature: Above 18°C

Maximum rainfall: 1500–2500 mm

Examples: Amazon Basin, Congo Basin, coastal areas of South India.

 Subtypes:

Af – Equatorial Rainy Climate

Aw – Tropical Savanna Climate

Am – Monsoon Climate

(B) Dry Climates

Annual Rainfall: Very Low (less than 250 mm)

High Evaporation Rate

Examples: Sahara, Arabia, Thar Desert

Subtypes:

Bw – Desert Climate

Bs – Semi-Arid or Steppe Climate

(C) Temperate Climates

Mild Winters, Moderate Summers

Examples: Mediterranean, China, parts of South America

Subtypes:

Cf – Humid Subtropical

Cs – Mediterranean

Cw – Dry Winter

(D) Cold Continental Climate (Cold / Continental Climates)

Extremely cold winters, short but warm summers

Examples: Russia, Canada, interior North America

Subtypes:

Df – Humid cold climate

Dw – Dry winter

(E) Polar Climates

Temperatures below 10°C year-round

No real summer season

Examples: Greenland, Antarctica

Subtypes:

ET – Tundra climate

EF – Ice Cap climate

Advantages of the Coppen Classification:

1. Based on a scientific and quantitative basis.

2. Made the global climate easily understandable.

3. Showed the interrelationship between vegetation, temperature, and rainfall

 Limitations:

1. It ignores human life and economic aspects.

2. It does not accurately describe oceanic and mountainous regions.

 3. Being based solely on temperature and rainfall does not fully reflect the complexity of climate.

Other classification systems in brief:

1. Thornthwaite—based on evapotranspiration (1948)

2. Trewartha—an improved version of the Köppen classification (1966)

3. Strahler—based on energy balance and thermal zones

Conclusion:

The classification of global climates helps us to scientifically understand the diverse climate types found on Earth.

Of these, Köppen's classification is considered the most acceptable and useful from a teaching perspective.

 Summary Table:

Serial Number Classifier Base Year Major Categories

1 Greek Scholar Latitude Ancient Times Warm, Temperate, Cold

 2 Köppen Temperature, Precipitation, Vegetation 1900 A, B, C, D, E

3 Thornthwaite Transpiration 1948 Wet, Dry etc.

4 Trewartha Temperature Zone 1966 6 Main Climate Zones

Wind Circulation

(Wind Circulation / Atmospheric Circulation)

(Introduction):

(Main Cause of Wind Circulation):

(Types of Atmospheric Circulation):

(Extent)

(Global Level)

(Seasonal)

(Local Level)

(Primary Wind Circulation):

(A) दाब पर्तें (Pressure Belts):

(Equatorial Low Pressure Belt)

(Sub-tropical High Pressure Belt)

(Sub-polar Low Pressure Belt)

(Polar High Pressure Belt)

(Permanent Winds):

(Secondary Wind Circulation):

(Monsoon Winds):

(Cyclones and Anticyclones):

(Tertiary Circulation):

(Importance of Wind Circulation):

(Heat Distribution):

(Climate Formation):

(Influence on Ocean Currents):

(Natural Balance):

(Global Pattern):

1. Hadley Cell: 0°–30°

2. Ferrel Cell: 30°–60°

3. Polar Cell: 60°–90°

(Conclusion):

Wind Circulation

(Wind Circulation / Atmospheric Circulation)

1. Introduction:

Air is constantly in motion in the Earth's atmosphere.

This movement operates not only locally but as a balanced system across the Earth.

The global movement of this air is called atmospheric circulation.

Atmospheric circulation refers to—

> "the large-scale flow of air from one place to another on Earth,

caused primarily by the influence of temperature, pressure, and the Earth's rotation."

2. Main Cause of Wind Circulation:

The main cause of wind circulation is—

the uneven distribution of solar heat.

The sun's rays fall at different angles on different parts of the Earth,

causing higher temperatures (low pressure) and lower temperatures (high pressure) in some areas.

Air always moves from high pressure to low pressure, creating wind movement.

3. Types of Atmospheric Circulation:

Air circulation is divided into three levels:

Order Type Extent

1. Primary Circulation - Global Level

2. Secondary Circulation - Seasonal or Temporary Variation

3. Tertiary Circulation - Local Level

4. Primary Wind Circulation:

It is based on the structure of pressure belts and permanent winds around the Earth.

 (A) Pressure Belts:

1. Equatorial Low Pressure Belt

Between 0° and approximately 5°-10° latitude.

Here, the sun's rays fall directly, and the temperature is high,

causing air to rise and create low pressure.

2. Subtropical High Pressure Belt

Between approximately 25° and 35° latitude.

Here, air descends (Descending Air), thus creating a high-pressure area.

3. Subpolar Low Pressure Belt

Around 60° latitude.

Here, the meeting of warm and cold air creates low pressure.

 4. Polar High Pressure Belt

At both poles (90°N and 90°S).

Due to extreme cold, the air here is dense and heavy, creating high pressure.

(B) Permanent Winds:

Permanent winds always flow in one direction and blow year-round.

They are formed by the pressure layers described above.

Sequence Name of Wind Direction Flow Region Characteristics

1. Trade Winds: Subtropical high pressure → Equatorial low pressure. Flow from east to west from 30° to 0° latitude in both hemispheres; useful for sailors.

2. Westerlies: Subtropical high pressure → Subpolar low pressure. Blow from west to east between 30° and 60° latitude; play a major role in weather changes.

3. Polar Easterlies: Polar high pressure → Subpolar low pressure. Cold and dry winds from 60° to 90° latitude; blow from both the North and South Poles.

5. Secondary Wind Circulation:

This occurs due to seasonal or temporary influences on permanent winds.

Key examples:

1. Monsoon Winds:

In South Asia, especially India.

They blow from the southwest in summer (wet),

and from the northeast in winter (dry).

This is a classic example of seasonal circulation.

2. Cyclones and Anticyclones:

Winds circulating toward a low-pressure center (cyclonic).

Winds blowing outward from high pressure (anticyclonic).

6. Tertiary Circulation:

This depends on local conditions.

Example —

Wind Name Description

Land and Sea Breezes blow from sea to land during the day (Sea Breeze), from land to sea at night (Land Breeze).

Mountain and Valley Winds blow from valley to mountain during the day, and from mountain to valley at night.

Hot Wind: A dry, hot wind blowing in the summer season in North India.

Foehn or Chinook: A hot, dry wind blowing on mountain slopes.

7. Importance of Wind Circulation:

1. Heat Distribution:

Maintains the balance of heat from equatorial regions to polar regions.

2. Climate Formation:

Winds affect rainfall, humidity, and temperature.

3. Influence on Ocean Currents:

Winds determine the direction of ocean currents.

4. Natural Balance:

Air circulation maintains the global balance of pressure, temperature, and humidity.

8. Coriolis Force and Wind Direction:

Due to the Earth's rotation, the wind deflects from its straight direction.

In the Northern Hemisphere: deflects to the right.

In the Southern Hemisphere: deflects to the left.

This effect is called the Coriolis Force.

This is why the trade and westerly winds blow in an inclined direction.

9. Global Pattern of Atmospheric Circulation:

Atmospheric circulation on Earth operates in three cells:

1. Hadley Cell: Between 0°–30° latitude (trade winds).

2. Ferrel Cell: Between 30°–60° latitude (westerlies).

3. Polar Cell: Between 60°–90° latitude (polar winds).

These three cells together form the entire global circulation system on Earth.

📊 10. Conclusion:

Atmospheric circulation is the basis of Earth's climate system.

It maintains the balance of temperature, humidity, and pressure in different parts of the Earth.

If this system were not there, some parts of the Earth would be extremely hot and others would be extremely cold.

Thus, air circulation is very important for the life balance of the earth.

Pressure belts

(Equatorial Low Pressure Belt)

(Sub-Tropical High Pressure Belt)

(Sub-Polar Low Pressure Belt)

(Polar High Pressure Belt)

(Shifting of Pressure Belts)

Temperature

(Temperature)

(Introduction):

(Meaning of Temperature):

(Main Source of Temperature):

(Distribution of Temperature on Earth):

(Factors Affecting Temperature):

(Latitude):

(Altitude):

(Distance from the Sea):

(Ocean Currents):

(Land and Water Contrast):

(Vegetation Cover):

(Atmospheric Circulation):

(Clouds and Humidity):

(Daily and Annual Variation in Temperature):

(A) दैनिक परिवर्तन (Diurnal Variation):

(Annual Variation):

(Distribution of Temperature):

(Isotherm):

(Introduction)

(Conclusion):

Temperature

Introduction:

Temperature is the most important element of Earth's atmosphere.

It affects life on Earth, climate, air pressure, rainfall, winds, and seasons.

Atmospheric temperature depends on the heat received from the Sun.

“The state of being hot or cold in an object or place is called temperature.”

Meaning of Temperature:

Temperature is a measure of the amount of heat present in a place or object.

This heat depends on the radiation received from the Sun.

Units of measuring temperature:

Centigrade (°C)

Fahrenheit (°F)

Kelvin (K)

Main Source of Temperature:

The Sun is the main source of heat and light for Earth. Solar radiation from the Sun heats the Earth, and the Earth radiates this heat to the atmosphere.

Distribution of Temperature on Earth:

Temperature on Earth is not uniformly distributed. It depends on factors such as latitude, altitude, landforms, ocean currents, and winds.

Major Factors Affecting Temperature:

1. Latitude:

The intensity of the Sun's rays depends on latitude.

At the Equator, the Sun's rays fall directly, so the temperature is higher.

As we move toward the poles, the rays are inclined, so the temperature decreases.

2. Altitude:

Temperature decreases with increasing altitude.

On average, the temperature decreases by about 1°C for every 165 meters of altitude.

>This is called the Normal Lapse Rate.

Example: Shimla is cooler than Delhi because it is higher.

3. Distance from the Sea:

Temperatures do not vary much in areas near the sea.

While inland areas, there is a greater difference between day and night temperatures.

This is called continentality.

4. Ocean Currents:

Warm ocean currents increase the temperature of coastal areas.

Cold currents decrease the temperature.

Example:

The warm Kuroshio Current increases the temperature in Japan.

The cold Humboldt Current decreases the temperature in Peru.

5. Land and Water Contrast:

Land heats up quickly and cools down quickly.

Water heats up slowly and cools down slowly.

Therefore, temperatures near the sea remain stable.

 6. Vegetation Cover:

Areas with more vegetation block the sun's rays, keeping temperatures relatively low.

7. Atmospheric Circulation:

Winds carry warm air to cooler areas and cool air to warmer areas, maintaining a balanced temperature.

8. Clouds and Humidity:

The presence of clouds blocks the sun's rays during the day, lowering temperatures.

At night, clouds reflect heat back to the Earth, increasing temperatures.

Daily and Annual Variation in Temperature:

(A) Diurnal Variation:

Temperature increases with sunrise and peaks in the afternoon.

Temperature decreases after sunset and peaks in the morning.

The difference between the maximum and minimum temperatures is called the diurnal temperature range.

 (B) Annual Variation:

Temperatures vary across seasons.

Temperatures are higher in summer and lower in winter.

This difference is called the annual temperature range.

Distribution of Temperature:

Isotherms are used to explain the distribution of temperature.

Isotherms:

Lines connecting places with the same temperature are called isotherms.

Characteristics:

Isotherms are parallel to the equator.

The influence of land and sea changes their shape.

Isotherms are more parallel in the Southern Hemisphere because there is more water there.

Distribution of Temperature Zones on Earth Based on Horizontal Temperature

(Distribution of Temperature Zones of the Earth on the Basis of Horizontal Temperature)

Introduction

Temperature is not distributed evenly across the Earth's surface.

Due to variations in the angle of incidence of the sun's rays, some areas of the Earth are extremely hot, some moderate, and some very cold.

On this basis, the Earth is divided into different heat zones.

Main Heat Zones of the Earth

The Earth is generally divided into three major heat zones based on horizon temperature:

Serial Number Name of the heat zone Latitudinal range Main characteristics

1. Torrid Zone (Tropical Zone) 0° to 23½° North and South (between the Tropic of Cancer and Capricorn) Extremely hot, direct sunlight, dense vegetation cover (e.g., Amazon, Congo, Indonesia)

2. Temperate Zone (Temperate Zone) 23½°–66½° North and South (between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn and the Antarctic Circle) Moderate temperatures, four distinct seasons.

3. Frigid Zone (Polar Zone) 66½°–90° North and South (within the Arctic and Antarctic Circles) Extremely cold, Snow-covered areas, sun rays falling obliquely

Inversion of Temperature

(Inversion of Temperature)

(Meaning):

(Definition):

(Normal Conditions):

(How Inversion Occurs):

(Types of Temperature Inversion):

(Radiation Inversion):

(Advection Inversion):

(Valley Inversion):

(Turbulence Inversion):

(Effects of Temperature Inversion):

(Conclusion):

Temperature Inversion

(Inversion of Temperature)

Meaning:

Generally, the temperature decreases with increasing altitude in the atmosphere.

That is, "For every 165 meters of altitude, the temperature decreases by approximately 1°C."

This is called the Normal Lapse Rate.

But in some circumstances, this order is reversed—

That is, as altitude increases, the temperature increases instead of decreasing.

This condition is called an inversion of temperature.

Definition:

When the temperature in the atmosphere increases with altitude instead of decreasing, that condition is called a temperature inversion.

Normal Conditions:

Sun radiation heats the Earth's surface.

Air in contact with the surface is heated and rises.

As it rises, the air expands and cools.

→ Thus, the temperature decreases as we ascend.

How Inversion Occurs:

When the earth cools rapidly at night, the air above it also cools, while the upper air remains relatively warm.

In this situation, layers of cold air form below and warm air above, leading to an inverse temperature gradient.

Types of Temperature Inversion:

1. Terrestrial Inversion (Radiation Inversion):

This type occurs on clear and calm nights.

The earth rapidly loses heat through radiation.

The air near the surface cools, while the upper air remains relatively warm.

This condition is commonly found in plains during winter nights.

Example: During winter in the plains of North India.

 2. Advection Inversion:

When warm air passes over a cold surface (such as snow-covered land or a cold ocean), the lower portion cools.

As a result, cold air forms below and warm air forms above.

This condition is more common in coastal areas.

Example: Coastal areas of Western Europe.

3. Valley Inversion:

This condition is seen in mountainous regions.

At night, cold air descends from the mountain slopes into the valleys.

This causes the lower portion of the valleys to remain cold and the upper portion to remain warm.

This is also called Slope Inversion.

Example: Himalayan valleys, Switzerland, etc.

4. Turbulence Inversion:

This condition occurs when the wind speed in the upper layers of the atmosphere is low and the lower layers are high.

This causes air layers to mix and create a temperature inversion.

Effects of Temperature Inversion:

 1. Effect on Weather and Climate:

Fog and smog form.

Stability in the atmosphere increases, preventing upward movement of air.

 2. Effect on Pollution:

Air pollutants (smoke, dust, gases) become trapped in the lower layers.

This increases pollution levels, especially in cities.

 3. Effect on Agriculture:

Temperature inversion increases the likelihood of frost formation.

This can be harmful to crops.

 4. Effect on Air Circulation:

During an inversion, the upward flow of air is disrupted.

This affects local air currents.

Conclusion:

Temperature inversion is an important atmospheric phenomenon that affects local weather, pollution, and agriculture.

It creates a reversal of the normal temperature distribution and plays a vital role in the Earth's heat balance.
