Structure and Composition of Atmosphere
Composition of Atmosphere (वायुमंडल का संघटन)
(Water Vapour):
(Dust Particles):
The atmosphere is a mixture of several gases that surround the Earth. It extends up to about 10,000 km, but most of the mass is concentrated within the first 16 km from the surface.
Main Components of the Atmosphere:
Gas Percentage by Volume
Nitrogen (N₂) 78.08%
Oxygen (O₂) 20.95%
Argon (Ar) 0.93%
Carbon Dioxide (CO₂) 0.04%
Other Gases (Neon, Helium, Methane, Ozone, Hydrogen, etc.) Traces
Water Vapour (H₂O):
Variable amount (0.02% to 4%)
Plays a major role in weather and climate formation.
Dust Particles:
Include smoke, salt, pollen, and industrial dust.
Help in cloud condensation and precipitation.
Structure of Atmosphere (वायुमंडल की संरचना)
(Troposphere):
(Stratosphere):
(Mesosphere):
(Thermosphere):
(Exosphere):
The atmosphere is divided into five main layers based on temperature variation:
1. Troposphere (क्षोभमंडल):
Lowest layer (up to 8 km at poles and 18 km at equator).
All weather phenomena occur here (rain, clouds, storms).
Temperature decreases with height at a rate of 6.5°C per 1000 m.
Upper limit: Tropopause.
2. Stratosphere (समतापमंडल):
Lies above the troposphere (up to 50 km).
Contains Ozone layer that absorbs harmful UV rays.
Jet planes fly in this layer due to stability.
3. Mesosphere (मध्य मंडल):
Extends from 50 to 80 km.
Temperature decreases with height again.
Meteors burn up in this layer.
Upper boundary: Mesopause.
4. Thermosphere (तापमंडल):
Lies between 80 to 700 km.
Temperature increases rapidly due to solar radiation absorption.
Contains Ionosphere, important for radio communication.
5. Exosphere (बहिर्मंडल):
Outermost layer (above 700 km).
Very thin air, mainly hydrogen and helium.
Gradually merges with outer space.
Importance of Atmosphere (वायुमंडल का महत्व)
Protects life from harmful solar radiation.
Maintains Earth’s temperature suitable for living organisms.
Provides oxygen for respiration and carbon dioxide for photosynthesis.
Helps in weather and rainfall formation.
Summary Table (सारांश तालिका)
Layer Altitude (approx.) Temperature Trend Key Features
Troposphere 0–18 km ↓ Decreases Weather, clouds
Stratosphere 18–50 km ↑ Increases Ozone layer
Mesosphere 50–80 km ↓ Decreases Meteors burn
Thermosphere 80–700 km ↑ Increases Ionosphere
Exosphere 700+ km — Outer space merge
