(Continental Drift Theory)”
(Continental Drift Theory)
(Alfred Wegener), 1912
(Introduction)
(Wegener’s Proposition)
(Pangaea)
(Evidences for Continental Drift)
(A) जियोग्राफिकल प्रमाण (Geographical Evidences)
(Jig-saw fit)
(Geological Evidences)
(Rock Structure Similarity)
(Paleontological Evidences)
(Mesosaurus Fossil)
(Glossopteris flora)
(Climatic Evidences)
(Glacial Deposits)
(Forces of Drift)
(Centrifugal Force)
(Tidal Force)
(Pole Fleeing Force)
(Criticism of Continental Drift Theory)
(Significance)
(Modern View)
(Plate Tectonics Theory)
(Conclusion)
Continental Drift Theory
Continental Drift Theory
Proposed by – Alfred Wegener, 1912
1. Introduction
The Continental Drift Theory is the earliest scientific theory explaining the current positions of the continents on the Earth's crust. Wegener proposed that all the continents were once joined together as a single landmass called Pangaea, which broke apart over time and drifted to their present locations.
This theory formed the foundation for the development of Plate Tectonics.
2. Wegener's Proposition
(1) One Continent – Pangaea
Approximately 250 million years ago, there was a single supercontinent on Earth, called Pangaea.
Surrounding Pangaea was a vast ocean – Panthalassa.
(2) Fragmentation of Pangaea
Approximately 200 million years ago, Pangaea broke into two parts:
1. Laurasia – the northern segment
2. Gondwana – the southern segment
(3) Further Divisions
Further fragmentation of these two landmasses resulted in:
Asia, Europe, North America (from Laurasia)
Africa, South America, India, Australia, Antarctica (from Gondwana)
and they moved to their present positions.
(4) Movement of the Ocean Floor and Continents
According to Wegener:
The continents are rigid bodies that drift on the soft, viscous material of the ocean floor, consisting of "SIAL (continental crust)"
and "SIMA (oceanic crust)".
3. Evidence for Continental Drift
Wegener presented various scientific pieces of evidence. The main evidence includes:
(A) Geographical Evidence
1. Coastlines of the Continents (A) The Jigsaw Fit
The coastlines of South America and Africa fit together precisely.
A similar fit can also be observed between India, Antarctica, and Australia.
(B) Geological Evidence
1. Similarity of Rock Types
The ancient rock structures of South Africa, Brazil, and India were found to be similar.
2. Similarity of Gondwana Basins
Similar Gondwana sediments are found in India, Australia, South America, and South Africa.
(C) Paleontological Evidence
1. Mesosaurus Fossil
This organism was found only in Africa and South America.
It could not cross the ocean → the two continents were previously connected.
2. Glossopteris Flora
Its fossils have been found in India, Africa, South America, and Australia.
(D) Climatic Evidence
1. Glacial Deposits
Ancient glacial markings are found in India, Africa, and Australia → these regions were previously near the poles.
2. Coal Deposits
Coal is formed in tropical climates, but vast coal deposits exist in Europe and America → these regions were previously located near the equator.
4. Causes of Continental Drift According to Wegener (Forces of Drift)
(1) Centrifugal Force
The Earth's rotation pushes the continents towards the equator.
(2) Tidal Force
Tidal forces generated by the gravitational pull of the sun and moon can also cause the continents to move.
(3) Pole Fleeing Force
A force acting outwards from the poles towards the equator.
✔ However, all these forces are very weak, so modern scientists do not accept them.
5. Criticism of Wegener's Theory (Criticism of Continental Drift Theory)
1. Lack of Mechanism for Movement
Wegener could not explain how such massive continents moved and by what force. 1. Shifted from...
2. Scientific Errors in the Equations
Centrifugal and tidal forces are not powerful enough to move continents thousands of kilometers away.
3. Rigidity of the Oceanic Crust
The idea of the ocean floor being "soft" proved incorrect.
4. Incorrect Analysis of Earthquakes and Volcanism
Wegener could not connect these activities to the movement of continents.
6. Significance of Wegener's Theory
Although the theory had shortcomings, its significance is immense:
1. Foundation for the development of the Plate Tectonics Theory.
2. Basis for understanding the modern structure of continents and oceans.
3. Inspiration for new research in geology, geography, climatology, and paleontology.
4. Significant contribution to understanding the world's mountain ranges, earthquake zones, and seafloor spreading.
7. Modern Scientific Perspective
Plate Tectonics Theory
(After 1960)
The Earth's outer layer is divided into 7 large and several smaller plates.
The plates move by floating on the asthenosphere.
Seafloor spreading, subduction, volcanism, and mountain building are all results of plate movement.
The movement of continents proposed by Wegener is now understood as the movement of plates.
8. Conclusion
The Continental Drift Theory is the initial foundation of modern geology.
Although Wegener could not provide a scientific explanation, the evidence he presented was so strong that the Plate Tectonics Theory later scientifically proved his concept.
Today, the world accepts that continents are indeed dynamic and their positions are constantly changing.
