(Tides)
(Definition)
(Main Causes of Tides)
(Gravitational pull of Moon):
(Gravitational pull of Sun):
(Rotation of Earth):
(Centrifugal Force):
(Types of Tides)
(Daily Tides)
(Spring Tide)
(Neap Tide)
(Frequency of Tides)
(Factors Affecting Tides)
(Shape of Coastline):
(Depth of Sea):
(Wind and Atmospheric Pressure):
(Ocean Basin Shape):
(Effects of Tides)
(Aid in Navigation):
(Cleaning of Ports):
(Tidal Energy Production):
(Fishing):
(Coastal Erosion and Deposition):
(Global Distribution of Tides)
(Conclusion)
Tides
Definition
Tides are the regular rise and fall of sea level.
This phenomenon occurs due to the gravitational pull of the Moon and Sun and the Earth's rotation.
In simple terms:
When sea water rises, it is called a high tide, and when it falls, it is called a low tide.
Main Causes of Tides
1. Gravitational Pull of the Moon:
The Moon pulls the Earth's water toward itself.
Sea water rises on the side facing the Moon—a tide occurs there.
At the same time, tides occur on the opposite side of the Earth because the Earth's center also pulls slightly.
2. Gravitational Pull of the Sun:
The Sun is very far from Earth, but due to its large size, it also affects the tides.
The Sun's influence is approximately 46% of that of the Moon.
3. Rotation of the Earth:
The Earth rotates on its axis, causing two high tides and two low tides a day at a particular location.
4. Centrifugal Force:
Both the Earth and the Moon rotate around their respective centers, and the centrifugal force generated by this also contributes to the tides.
Types of Tides
1. Daily Tides
Most locations on Earth experience two high tides and two low tides a day.
This is called a semi-diurnal tide.
2. Spring Tide
When the Sun, Moon, and Earth are in a straight line—
such as during the New Moon and Full Moon—
then the gravitational force of the Sun and Moon combine to produce the highest tide. This is called a Spring Tide.
3. Neap Tide
When the Sun and Moon are at a 90° angle to the Earth—
that is, during the eighth day of the waxing and waning moon—
then the gravitational force of the two cancels each other out and the tide height decreases. This is called a Neap Tide.
Frequency of Tides
In a day (24 hours 52 minutes), there are approximately two high tides and two low tides.
That is, the water level changes approximately every 6 hours and 13 minutes.
Factors Affecting Tides
1. Shape of Coastline:
Narrow bays, such as the Bay of Fundy, Canada, have very high tides.
2. Depth of Sea:
Tides are more pronounced in shallow seas.
3. Wind Direction and Force:
Strong winds and low air pressure help lift water.
4. Ocean Basin Shape:
The shape of the ocean affects the spread of tides.
Effects of Tides:
1. Aid in Navigation:
During high tides, the sea level rises, allowing ships to easily enter ports.
2. Cleaning of Ports:
During low tide, the flow of water flushes out silt.
3. Tidal Energy Production:
Electricity is generated from tidal fluctuations.
Example: La Rance – Tidal Power Project in France.
4. Fishing:
Fish come closer to the shore during high tide, which helps fishermen.
5. Coastal Erosion and Deposition:
Tides affect both erosion and deposition of soil on coasts.
Global Distribution of Tides
Regional Tide Height
Bay of Fundy (Canada) Approximately 15 meters
Coasts of Britain and France 4–6 meters
Coastal areas of the Indian Ocean 2–3 meters
Mediterranean Sea Very low (up to 0.3 meters)
Conclusion
Tides are a natural, cyclical, and regular phenomenon caused by the gravitational interaction between the Earth, Moon, and Sun.
They play a vital role in Earth's marine life, climate, navigation, fisheries, and energy production.
