Features and Salinity
(Introduction):
(Relief Features of the Ocean Floor):
(A) महाद्वीपीय शेल्फ (Continental Shelf) -
(Continental Slope):
(Abyssal Plain):
(Guyots):
(Mid-Oceanic Ridge):
(Oceanic Trench):
(Islands):
(Salinity of Ocean Water):
(Meaning of Salinity):
सोडियम सल्फेट (Na₂SO₄) 4.74%
(Factors Affecting Salinity):
(Precipitation):
(Evaporation):
(Fresh Water Inflow):
(Melting of Ice):
(Ocean Currents):
(Distribution of Salinity):
(A) क्षैतिज वितरण (Horizontal Distribution):
(Vertical Distribution):
(Areas of High Salinity):
(Mediterranean Sea) – 38‰
(Persian Gulf) – 37–39‰
(Areas of Low Salinity):
(Arctic Ocean)
(Effects of Salinity):
(Conclusion):
Features and Salinity
(Major Forms of Topography and Salinity)
1. Introduction:
Oceans cover most of the Earth's surface. Ocean water is saline because it contains dissolved salts.
Both ocean relief features and salinity significantly influence the nature, density, temperature, and marine life of seawater.
2. Relief Features of the Ocean Floor:
The ocean floor is uneven and contains various landforms.
It is divided into the following major parts:
(A) Continental Shelf -
This is the submerged edge of a continent.
It reaches a depth of approximately 200 meters.
This region is rich in fauna and mineral resources.
Examples: Wide shelves are found in the Bay of Bengal, the Arabian Sea, and the North Sea.
(B) Continental Slope:
This is the abrupt depth following the shelf.
Its depth ranges from 200 meters to 3000 meters.
This is called the transition zone between the continent and the ocean floor.
(C) Abyssal Plain:
This is the widest and flattest part of the ocean.
The depth ranges from approximately 3000 to 6000 meters.
This area is covered with fine silt, clay, and organic remains.
(D) Seamounts and Guyots:
Mountains located under the sea are called Seamounts.
When they rise above the water surface, they become islands.
Submerged mountains with flat tops are called Guyots.
Example: The Hawaiian Islands are examples of seamounts.
(E) Mid-Oceanic Ridge:
This is a long mountain range extending across the middle of the ocean.
New crust is formed here—a process called seafloor spreading.
Example: Mid-Atlantic Ridge.
(F) Oceanic Trench:
This is the deepest part of the ocean.
These are formed in subduction zones of lithospheric plates.
Example: Mariana Trench—the deepest place in the world (10,994 meters).
(G) Islands:
Landscapes located in the ocean that are surrounded by water.
Types: Continental, Volcanic, Coral Islands.
Examples: Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Maldives, Hawaiian Islands.
3. Salinity of Ocean Water:
🔹 Meaning of Salinity:
“The amount of dissolved salts present in seawater is called salinity.”
It is usually expressed in parts per thousand (‰).
Example: If 1 kilogram of seawater contains 35 grams of salt, its salinity would be 35‰ (pmil).
Major Salts Found in Seawater:
Name of Salt Percentage (%)
Sodium Chloride (NaCl) 77.76%
Magnesium Chloride (MgCl₂) 10.88%
Sodium Sulfate (Na₂SO₄) 4.74%
Calcium Sulfate (CaSO₄) 3.60%
Potassium Chloride (KCl) 2.46%
Other 0.56%
Factors Affecting Salinity:
1. Precipitation:
Increased rainfall decreases salinity.
2. Evaporation:
In areas with higher temperatures, water evaporates, increasing salinity.
3. Freshwater Inflow:
Freshwater entering the sea from rivers reduces salinity.
4. Melting of Ice:
This increases the amount of freshwater in seawater, reducing salinity.
5. Ocean Currents:
Warm currents increase salinity, while cold currents decrease it.
Distribution of Salinity:
(A) Horizontal Distribution:
Salinity is approximately 35° near the equator.
In the subtropics, it increases to 36° to 37°.
In the polar regions, salinity decreases to 30° or less.
(B) Vertical Distribution:
Salinity is higher at the surface.
It decreases with depth because the temperature decreases and solubility increases.
Areas of High Salinity:
1. Red Sea – Over 40‰
2. Mediterranean Sea – 38‰
3. Persian Gulf – 37–39‰
Areas of Low Salinity:
1. Baltic Sea – Less than 10‰
2. Arctic Ocean
3. Bay of Bengal – Areas influenced by freshwater from rivers
Effects of Salinity:
1. Effect on seawater density.
2. Role in the formation of ocean currents.
3. Effect on the diversity of aquatic life.
4. Effects on wind temperature and humidity.
5. Affects ice formation.
4. Conclusion:
The relief of the oceans is a result of Earth's dynamic processes, while salinity depends on climate, evaporation, and water flow.
Both are vitally important for the marine environment, currents, temperature, and marine life.
Their study is a major part of physical geography and oceanography.
