Inversion of Temperature

(Inversion of Temperature)

(Meaning):

(Definition):

(Normal Conditions):

(How Inversion Occurs):

(Types of Temperature Inversion):

(Radiation Inversion):

(Advection Inversion):

(Valley Inversion):

(Turbulence Inversion):

(Effects of Temperature Inversion):

(Conclusion):

Temperature Inversion

(Inversion of Temperature)

Meaning:

Generally, the temperature decreases with increasing altitude in the atmosphere.

That is, "For every 165 meters of altitude, the temperature decreases by approximately 1°C."

This is called the Normal Lapse Rate.

But in some circumstances, this order is reversed—

That is, as altitude increases, the temperature increases instead of decreasing.

This condition is called an inversion of temperature.

Definition:

When the temperature in the atmosphere increases with altitude instead of decreasing, that condition is called a temperature inversion.

Normal Conditions:

Sun radiation heats the Earth's surface.

Air in contact with the surface is heated and rises.

As it rises, the air expands and cools.

→ Thus, the temperature decreases as we ascend.

How Inversion Occurs:

When the earth cools rapidly at night, the air above it also cools, while the upper air remains relatively warm.

In this situation, layers of cold air form below and warm air above, leading to an inverse temperature gradient.

Types of Temperature Inversion:

1. Terrestrial Inversion (Radiation Inversion):

This type occurs on clear and calm nights.

The earth rapidly loses heat through radiation.

The air near the surface cools, while the upper air remains relatively warm.

This condition is commonly found in plains during winter nights.

Example: During winter in the plains of North India.

 2. Advection Inversion:

When warm air passes over a cold surface (such as snow-covered land or a cold ocean), the lower portion cools.

As a result, cold air forms below and warm air forms above.

This condition is more common in coastal areas.

Example: Coastal areas of Western Europe.

3. Valley Inversion:

This condition is seen in mountainous regions.

At night, cold air descends from the mountain slopes into the valleys.

This causes the lower portion of the valleys to remain cold and the upper portion to remain warm.

This is also called Slope Inversion.

Example: Himalayan valleys, Switzerland, etc.

4. Turbulence Inversion:

This condition occurs when the wind speed in the upper layers of the atmosphere is low and the lower layers are high.

This causes air layers to mix and create a temperature inversion.

Effects of Temperature Inversion:

 1. Effect on Weather and Climate:

Fog and smog form.

Stability in the atmosphere increases, preventing upward movement of air.

 2. Effect on Pollution:

Air pollutants (smoke, dust, gases) become trapped in the lower layers.

This increases pollution levels, especially in cities.

 3. Effect on Agriculture:

Temperature inversion increases the likelihood of frost formation.

This can be harmful to crops.

 4. Effect on Air Circulation:

During an inversion, the upward flow of air is disrupted.

This affects local air currents.

Conclusion:

Temperature inversion is an important atmospheric phenomenon that affects local weather, pollution, and agriculture.

It creates a reversal of the normal temperature distribution and plays a vital role in the Earth's heat balance.
