(Temperature)
(Introduction):
(Meaning of Temperature):
(Main Source of Temperature):
(Distribution of Temperature on Earth):
(Factors Affecting Temperature):
(Latitude):
(Altitude):
(Distance from the Sea):
(Ocean Currents):
(Land and Water Contrast):
(Vegetation Cover):
(Atmospheric Circulation):
(Clouds and Humidity):
(Daily and Annual Variation in Temperature):
(A) दैनिक परिवर्तन (Diurnal Variation):
(Annual Variation):
(Distribution of Temperature):
(Isotherm):

Temperature
Introduction:
Temperature is the most important element of Earth's atmosphere.
It affects life on Earth, climate, air pressure, rainfall, winds, and seasons.
Atmospheric temperature depends on the heat received from the Sun.
“The state of being hot or cold in an object or place is called temperature.”
Meaning of Temperature:
Temperature is a measure of the amount of heat present in a place or object.
This heat depends on the radiation received from the Sun.
Units of measuring temperature:
Centigrade (°C)
Fahrenheit (°F)
Kelvin (K)
Main Source of Temperature:
The Sun is the main source of heat and light for Earth. Solar radiation from the Sun heats the Earth, and the Earth radiates this heat to the atmosphere.
Distribution of Temperature on Earth:
Temperature on Earth is not uniformly distributed. It depends on factors such as latitude, altitude, landforms, ocean currents, and winds.
Major Factors Affecting Temperature:
1. Latitude:
The intensity of the Sun's rays depends on latitude.
At the Equator, the Sun's rays fall directly, so the temperature is higher.
As we move toward the poles, the rays are inclined, so the temperature decreases.
2. Altitude:
Temperature decreases with increasing altitude.
On average, the temperature decreases by about 1°C for every 165 meters of altitude.
>This is called the Normal Lapse Rate.
Example: Shimla is cooler than Delhi because it is higher.
3. Distance from the Sea:
Temperatures do not vary much in areas near the sea.
While inland areas, there is a greater difference between day and night temperatures.
This is called continentality.
4. Ocean Currents:
Warm ocean currents increase the temperature of coastal areas.
Cold currents decrease the temperature.
Example:
The warm Kuroshio Current increases the temperature in Japan.
The cold Humboldt Current decreases the temperature in Peru.
5. Land and Water Contrast:
Land heats up quickly and cools down quickly.
Water heats up slowly and cools down slowly.
Therefore, temperatures near the sea remain stable.
6. Vegetation Cover:
Areas with more vegetation block the sun's rays, keeping temperatures relatively low.
7. Atmospheric Circulation:
Winds carry warm air to cooler areas and cool air to warmer areas, maintaining a balanced temperature.
8. Clouds and Humidity:
The presence of clouds blocks the sun's rays during the day, lowering temperatures.
At night, clouds reflect heat back to the Earth, increasing temperatures.
Daily and Annual Variation in Temperature:
(A) Diurnal Variation:
Temperature increases with sunrise and peaks in the afternoon.
Temperature decreases after sunset and peaks in the morning.
The difference between the maximum and minimum temperatures is called the diurnal temperature range.
(B) Annual Variation:
Temperatures vary across seasons.
Temperatures are higher in summer and lower in winter.
This difference is called the annual temperature range.
Distribution of Temperature:
Isotherms are used to explain the distribution of temperature.
Isotherms:
Lines connecting places with the same temperature are called isotherms.
Characteristics:
Isotherms are parallel to the equator.
The influence of land and sea changes their shape.
Isotherms are more parallel in the Southern Hemisphere because there is more water there.
Distribution of Temperature Zones on Earth Based on Horizontal Temperature
(Distribution of Temperature Zones of the Earth on the Basis of Horizontal Temperature)
Introduction
Temperature is not distributed evenly across the Earth's surface.
Due to variations in the angle of incidence of the sun's rays, some areas of the Earth are extremely hot, some moderate, and some very cold.
On this basis, the Earth is divided into different heat zones.
Main Heat Zones of the Earth
The Earth is generally divided into three major heat zones based on horizon temperature:
Serial Number Name of the heat zone Latitudinal range Main characteristics
1. Torrid Zone (Tropical Zone) 0° to 23½° North and South (between the Tropic of Cancer and Capricorn) Extremely hot, direct sunlight, dense vegetation cover (e.g., Amazon, Congo, Indonesia)
2. Temperate Zone (Temperate Zone) 23½°–66½° North and South (between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn and the Antarctic Circle) Moderate temperatures, four distinct seasons.
3. Frigid Zone (Polar Zone) 66½°–90° North and South (within the Arctic and Antarctic Circles) Extremely cold, Snow-covered areas, sun rays falling obliquely
