(Types of Ocean Deposits)
(Lithogenous Deposits)
(Biogenous Deposits)
(Hydrogenous Deposits)
(Cosmogenous Deposits)
(Distribution of Ocean Deposits)
(Neritic Zone)
(Pelagic Zone)
(Importance of Ocean Deposits)
(Major Oceanic Deposits)
(Conclusion)
Ocean Deposits
Introduction:
The accumulation of soil, sand, mud, fossils, shells, and organic remains found on the ocean floor over time is called ocean deposits.
These deposits are the result of physical and biological processes on the ocean floor.
Sources of Ocean Deposits
1. Terrigenous Sources
Materials carried from land by rivers, winds, and glaciers.
Examples: sand, clay, silt, etc.
2. Biogenous Sources
Deposits formed from the remains of marine organisms (such as foraminifera, radiolarians, diatoms, etc.).
3. Pelagic Sources
Materials formed by chemical reactions in ocean water, such as manganese nodules, iron oxides, etc.
4. Volcanic Sources
Ash, lava, and other minerals released from oceanic volcanic eruptions.
Types of Ocean Deposits
Ocean deposits are broadly divided into two types:
1. Lithogenous Deposits
These are sediments generated from land.
They reach the ocean through rivers, wind, and glaciers.
They are more common in coastal areas.
Examples: Sand, Silt, Clay, etc.
2. Biogenous Deposits
They are formed from the skeletons and remains of marine organisms.
They are of two types:
(i) Calcareous Ooze – Formed from foraminifera, coccoliths, etc.
(ii) Siliceous Ooze – Made from diatoms, radiolarians, etc.
3️⃣ Hydrogenous Deposits
Mineral deposits formed by chemical reactions in seawater.
Examples: Manganese nodules, iron-containing materials, phosphorites.
4️⃣ Cosmogenous Deposits
Materials formed from meteorites or dust particles from space.
Found in very small quantities.
Distribution of Ocean Deposits
1. Neritic Zone
Heavy particles from terrestrial sources are found here.
Sand, silt, and organic matter are predominant.
2. Pelagic Zone
Light and fine particles accumulate here.
Ooze is mainly found here.
Importance of Ocean Deposits
1. Helps in understanding the geological structure of the ocean.
2. Source of marine mineral resources (e.g., manganese nodules, phosphorites).
3. Useful in studying marine biodiversity and the environment.
4. Provides historical evidence of Earth's climate change.
Major Oceanic Deposits
Regions: Major Deposits
Atlantic Ocean Calcareous Ooze
Pacific Ocean Siliceous Ooze, Manganese Nodules
Indian Ocean Red Clay, Calcareous Ooze
Conclusion
Ocean deposits provide evidence of Earth's geological and biological history.
Their study is crucial for understanding the processes and resources occurring in the ocean depths.
