Natural Vegetation and Forest Resources

(Natural Vegetation and Forest Resources of Rajasthan)

1. Meaning of Natural Vegetation

Natural vegetation refers to the trees, plants, shrubs, and grasses that grow naturally in an area without human intervention.

The development of natural vegetation in Rajasthan primarily depends on rainfall, temperature, soil, topography, and water availability. 2. Factors Affecting Natural Vegetation in Rajasthan

Low rainfall – 10–50 cm in most parts

Extremely high temperatures – 45–50°C in summer

Sandy and shallow soil

Arid and semi-arid climate

Human activities – deforestation, grazing, agricultural expansion

3. Types of Natural Vegetation in Rajasthan

(A) Tropical Thorn Forests

Distribution Area

Western Rajasthan – Jaisalmer, Barmer, Bikaner, Churu

Shekhawati and Thar Desert region

Characteristics

Short trees

Thick bark, thorny leaves

Low transpiration capacity

Main Trees and Vegetation

Khejri (State Tree 🌳)

Babool

Rohida

Ker

Kair

Fogg

Thor

(B) Tropical Dry Deciduous Forests

Distribution Area

South-eastern Rajasthan

5. Status of Forest Area in Rajasthan

Total forest area of the state: approximately 9–10%

District with the highest forest cover: Udaipur

District with the lowest forest cover: Jaisalmer

(Significantly less than the average forest cover of India ≈ 33%)

6. Major Wildlife Sanctuaries and National Parks of Rajasthan
