(Drainage System of Rajasthan)
(Internal Drainage)
Rajasthan's Drainage System
(Drainage System of Rajasthan)
1. Meaning of Drainage System
A drainage system refers to the network of rivers, streams, and watercourses in a region through which rainwater flows and eventually empties into a sea, lake, or inland area.
In an arid and semi-arid region like Rajasthan, the nature of the drainage system is quite unique.
2. Main Characteristics of Rajasthan's Drainage System
Most rivers are seasonal (rain-fed).
There are very few perennial rivers.
An internal drainage system is found in the western part.
The Aravalli mountain range acts as a water divide for the drainage system.
The rivers have short-lived and irregular flows.
3. Classification of Rajasthan's Drainage System
The drainage system of Rajasthan is mainly divided into three parts—
(A) Rivers flowing into the Bay of Bengal
These rivers flow from the southeastern part of the state.
Major River – Chambal River
Origin: Janapav Hills (Madhya Pradesh)
Entry into Rajasthan: Chittorgarh
Flow Direction: Southeast
Tributaries:
Banas
Kalisindh
Parvati
Mez
Parbati
Characteristic: Rajasthan's largest and perennial river
(B) Rivers flowing into the Arabian Sea
These rivers originate from the western slopes of the Aravalli range.
1. Luni River
Origin: Nag Pahar, Ajmer
Drainage Area: Ajmer, Jodhpur, Barmer
Termination: Rann of Kutch
Tributaries:
Jojari
Sukri
Bandi
Characteristic: Rajasthan's longest river
(C) Internal Drainage System
These rivers do not reach the sea.
Major Rivers
Ghaggar
Kakni
Sagi
Saraswati (ancient river)
Major Lakes
Sambhar Lake (saline)
Didwana Lake
Pachpadra Lake
Lunkaransar
Characteristic:
In western Rajasthan, the rivers disappear into the desert. 4. Role of the Aravalli Mountain Range
The Aravalli mountain range acts as a watershed.
Rivers on its eastern slopes flow into the Bay of Bengal.
Rivers on its western slopes flow into the Arabian Sea or inland areas.
5. Brief Description of Major Rivers of Rajasthan

6. Geographical and Economic Significance of the Drainage System
Limited water availability for agriculture
Development of irrigation projects (Chambal Project)
Need for water conservation
Impact on human settlements
7. Important Points from an Examination Perspective
✔ Aravalli = Watershed
✔ Chambal = Largest river
✔ Luni = Longest river
✔ Western Rajasthan = Inland drainage
✔ Most rivers = Seasonal
