1. Introduction to the Western Desert Region
The Western Desert Region is the driest and most extensive physical region of India. It is commonly known as the Thar Desert. This region is mainly spread across the western part of Rajasthan and extends into the Sindh and Punjab provinces of Pakistan.
2. Geographical Extent
In India, the Thar Desert covers an area of approximately 234,000 square kilometers.
The major districts in Rajasthan are Jaisalmer, Barmer, Bikaner, Jodhpur, Churu, Nagaur, and Sri Ganganagar.
The Pakistan border in the northwest and the Aravalli Range in the east form its natural boundaries.
Sub-physical Divisions of the Western Desert Region
The Western Desert Region is mainly divided into four sub-physical divisions:
1. Sandy Desert Region (Erg Region)
This is the most extensive part of the Thar Desert.
Characteristics
Large sand dunes are found.
The dunes are mobile (shifting).
Rainfall is extremely low (10–20 cm).
Major Areas
Jaisalmer
Barmer
Bikaner
Churu
Types of Dunes
Longitudinal sand dunes
Crescent-shaped (Barchan) dunes
2. Bangar / Rocky Desert Region
This region is located west of the Aravalli Range.
Characteristics
Rocky and gravelly land.
The sand layer is thin.
Agriculture is very limited.
Major Areas
Jodhpur
Nagaur
Pali (western part)
3. Luni River Basin
The area formed by the Luni River.
Characteristics
Relatively fertile part of the desert region.
Alluvial soil in some areas.
Problem of saline soil.
Major Areas
Jodhpur
Barmer
Jalore
4. Dry Plains / Inland Drainage Region
In this region, the rivers do not reach the sea. Features
Inland drainage system.
Saline lakes and playa lakes.
Low rainfall but flat terrain.
Major Examples
Sambhar Lake
Didwana Lake
Pachpadra Lake
Summary (from an exam perspective)
Sub-physical division
Main characteristic
Sandy desert
Shifting sand dunes

3. Climate
The climate of the Thar Desert is extremely arid and extreme—
In summer, the temperature reaches 45°C to 50°C.
In winter, the temperature can drop to around 0°C.
The average annual rainfall is between 10 and 30 cm.
Rainfall is uncertain and uneven.
4. Geomorphic Features
Aeolian processes have a major influence in the Thar Desert—
(a) Sand Dunes
Longitudinal Dunes
Barchans (Crescent-shaped dunes)
These dunes constantly change their location.
(b) Flat Plains
Formed from old alluvial plains.
Gravelly and rocky areas are also found in some places.
5. Soil
Mainly sandy and loamy soil is found.
Very low water retention capacity.
Naturally unsuitable for agriculture.
6. Water Resources
Lack of permanent rivers.
The Luni River is the main river of this region, which becomes saline before flowing into the Arabian Sea.
Wells, tanks, and canals are the main sources of water.
The Indira Gandhi Canal Project has expanded irrigation in this region.
7. Vegetation
Thorny and arid vegetation is found. Major Trees:
Khejri
Acacia
Rohida

10. Importance of the Thar Desert
Strategically important region.
Immense potential for solar and wind energy.
A unique region of biodiversity and cultural heritage.
Conclusion
Despite its harsh natural conditions, the Thar Desert is an excellent example of human adaptation, cultural richness, and resource potential.
